Professor Kaufman-McKivigan has taught courses on the Civil War, Reconstruction, Labor, and Social Movements at Ohio State University, Cedar Valley College, Tarrant County Junior College, West Virginia University, and, currently, Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI).

John Kaufman-McKivigan has written numerous books, articles, and more, available from various prestigious publishers, including Yale University Press, Cornell University Press. and Edinburgh University Press.

Publications & Speeches

Education happens within the context of a larger community. With the Frederick Douglass Papers, Dr. Kaufman-McKivigan has expanded research on the life and times of Frederick Douglass not only for scholarly purposes but also through community outreach and exploring the relevance of the themes of Frederick Douglass’s many speeches for current events and a broader understanding of history through the Hoosiers Reading Frederick Douglass Together project.
